An Azimio official has shared in-depth details of how Raila Odinga was messed up in last month’s general elections by people he trusted.
According to the source who did not want to be mentioned, Raila’s plan to succeed Uhuru was messed up by a top Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary as well as his close allies.
The official, who worked closely with agents in election, spoke to the nation and revealed that Raila’s agents were changed by a top official in Azimio just hours to the general elections leaving behind those who had undergone training. The trained agents had already been given a down payment of Kshs 1,500 and were just waiting for letters of deployment when things took a sharp turn. In the end they were to receive Kshs5000 each as wages.
The official said that they had 290 lawyers as chief agents for constituencies and 47 lawyers as county chief agents.
“But on the eve of the elections, one of the top officials, a close ally of Mr Odinga, messed up the agents’ plan. It was a scenario where you have trained people, let’s say 1,500 in a constituency, then he comes and asks ‘how did you find these people?’.
“Then he gives you a different list and says ‘Work with these people’; and it is hours to the election, you don’t know who they are, you don’t know where they came from and then you are being instructed to send the letters to people who are not trained,” the source revealed.
The source however said that Raila’s ally who came up with a new list did not squander money meant for agents because he was not in charge of finance.
“But he came with a different list and instructed us to use that list, yet we had four hours to the opening of the polling stations. How would we have started sending those letters? How were we to train the newcomers? In the end, the agents were changed at 2am and there was not enough time to ensure all the logistics were in place, including having their introductory letters ready and accreditation as agents,” the source narrated.
On election day, trained agents showed up but they were denied access to polling stations because they did not have deployment letters. Another consequence of the action was that Raila lacked agents in several polling stations across the country because of the short notice.
“We did not have agents because of those issues. People are saying we did not pay agents. In this scenario, whom were we going to pay? You have two lists – the trained and the untrained,” the informant further revealed.
The CS and PS who worked with Azimio would tell them that everything was under control and they would spend time at Azimio’s Lavington office. They even said that they had a parallel tallying center but they never showed it to them.
“For me, Raila was lied to and misled by these people. When I asked him ‘Mzee, is everything okay?’ he would say ‘everything is under control.’ The PS and the CS gave Mzee false hope. We lost because of our ignorance,” he said.
“They were there physically but their hearts were elsewhere. After the results were announced, they all disappeared. Only the CS came once.
“Even one of Raila’s closest advisers, the only thing he kept saying was ‘pima suti’ (‘make yourself a suit’, ostensibly, for Mr Odinga’s swearing-in),” the source said
