Many people believe that mermaids do not exist and they are just imaginary creatures that are mostly used in the world of fantasy.
In the fantasy world, the creatures are portrayed as underwater half-human half-fish beings. There are also their male kind that are referred to as mermen.
Some actually believe that mermaids do exist but according to reports, no scientific evidence has been provided to prove that.
However, there are a number of timers that mermaids have been claimed to have been spotted on the African soil and they include:

From the look of the video one would have no doubts that it was actually a mermaid. The Kwale County Commander John Elungata and Coast Regional Commissioner however said that the reports are fake.
Mermaid in Gokwe, Zimbabwe.
A real mermaid is said to have been spotted in Gokwe, Zibambwe in February 2012. Sam Sipepa Nkomo, who was the minister for Water Resources then told the Senate that mermaids had been haunting government workers off dam sites in Mutare, Manicaland, and Gokwe Midlands.
Due to the harassment that the workers were facing, the job was paused for a while as workers developed a fear to work in the said areas.
Nkomo further said that traditional chiefs would perform rituals to exorcise the mermaids that were believed to be inhabiting reservoirs in Gokwe and Mutare
South Africa
Existence of mermaids was reported in South Africa in 2008. According to reports from the country’s media sites, a mermaid known as Kaaiman was spotted at Buffelsjags River at Suurbraak, a village close to Swellendam.
Many people said they saw the mermaid but a group of friends who were camping narrated their encounter. They claimed that they heard a loud banging and splashing on the water under a bridge. Out of curiosity they went to check what was up only to find the creature with a white female-human like body, with bright red eyes and long black hair.
At first, they thought it was a normal human being who needed help, but the strange eyes made them reconsider their thoughts. The mermaid is said to have disappeared into the water, never to be seen again.
It is alleged that most people avoid the scene because Kaaiman is known for pulling and trapping people under the water.
