The three inmates who escaped Kamiti maximum prison on Monday morning have been arrested.
Musharaf Abdalla alias Alex Shikanda (34), Joseph Juma Odhiambo (30) and Mohammed Ali Abikar (35) were arrested at Enzio forest in Mwingi East, Kitui County.
According to reports, the inmates, who were convicted of terrorism charges, were on their way to Somalia.
They were arrested following a tip off from members of the public. They are currently being transported to Nairobi.
The convicts escaped the highly guarded correctional facility by dislodging a brick on the wall of their cell.
They then used blankets and broomsticks to make ropes that they used to scale two high perimeter walls surrounding the prison.
Detectives who visited the prison to investigate how the inmates made their escape concluded that they had been helped by prison wardens to execute their mission.
It was further established that the inmates had drilled a hole from where they dislodged the brick from inside the prison to the outside.
Detectives recovered a rusty chisel that is believed to have been used in dislodging the block and a razor that was used in cutting pieces of blankets for making the ropes
Shikanda is from Mumias and was sentenced to 22 years in prison, Odhiambo from Matungu was serving 15 years for terror related crimes while Abikar was serving a 41-year-jail term, having been convicted in 2019 with three others for their role in the Garissa University attack.
Their escape has seen several prison wardens and Kamiti prison officers get arrested over claims of helping them escape.
Wycliffe Ogallo was also sacked as the head of prisons on Wednesday and was immediately replaced by Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba.
DCI had offered Kshs60 million as a reward to anyone who would provide information that would to the arrest of the inmates
