One of the 8 terror suspects that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had issued a wanted alert on surrendered himself to the police.
Robert Gathongo Nginjiri also known as Abdurahman Hija, and nicknamed Mnubi surrendered himself to the police in Nyeri.
The 27-year old who was living in Baraka estate, Kamakwa was arrested on Thursday after turning himself in while flanked by Nyumba Kumi administrators.
He however claimed that he was innocent of the terrorism allegations that DCI had levelled against him.
The suspect said that he was imprisoned at King’ong’o maximum prison in Nyeri over a robbery with violence case.
The court sentenced him to death but the conviction was overturned and he was released in January 2019, after a successful appeal.
According to DCI, Mnubi was part of a criminal gang that used to terrorize residents of Nyeri town before he escaped to Somalia.
“He joined Al-Sahabaab in 2016 and after undergoing training and fighting in Somalia, he was dispatched in the country to carry out attacks,” DCI said.
7 other suspects that are still being sought by the police are Peter Gichungu, Kassim Musa, Mohamud Abdi, Mohamed Ali Hussein, Erick Njoroge, Abdikadir Mohamed Abdikadir and Ahmed Mohamed.
DCI said the 8 were armed and dangerous and had been dispatched in the country to carry out terror attacks.
DCI called upon the public with information that would lead to their arrest to volunteer the police.
