The construction of the DP’s official residence in Karen cost Kshs450 million.
The government has kicked off plans to have the residence renovated and according to the Controller of budget Margaret Nyakango, the work would cost a whoppingKshs600 million.
In a report released on Tuesday February 20, Nyakango said that already Kshs100 million has been spend on crucial repairs.
She further said that the work began in July last year.
The government took up the renovation task after DP Rigathi Gachagua revealed why he was yet to occupy the residence in March last year, months after being elected and sworn into office.
According to him, the residence was in a sorry state with leaking roofs and broken items.
He further revealed that president William Ruto, who was the immediate former occupant of the residence, used to pay for utilities from his pocket.
“The official residence of the Deputy President was in bad shape when I became Deputy President. The rooftop was leaking, the borehole pump was broken down, and the house was totally in bad shape.
“Even if I would want to move into the DP’s residence, that place is inhabitable. I found Ruto staying in a house where the roof is leaking. They had even moved to a corner of the house together with the wife,” Gachagua said.
He would them move into the residence in May 2023. Before, he performed his duties at Harambee Annex in Nairobi CBD.
The residence, that sits on a 10-acre piece of land, was constructed during the reign of the late Mwai Kibaki
