A 30-year old man has lost his life after being burnt alive inside a pit latrine on Wednesday morning in Gatanga, Murang’a County.
Joseph Karanja met his death following suspicions that he had been involved in a robbery incident on Tuesday night.
According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the suspect went into hiding after the robbery.
“The suspect identified as Joseph Karanja, 30, had committed the robbery last night and went into hiding, leaving irate residents baying for his blood,” the report reads.
The locals continued their search on Wednesday morning with hopes that they will arrest the suspect and stop the persistent robberies being witnessed in the area.
“At the crack of dawn today, the unforgiving residents dispatched a search party for the suspect, in the hope that they would get hold of him and bring to an end the persistent robberies that have bedeviled Kiganjo sub-location, in the larger Gatanga constituency,” DCI stated.
The residents who were on the verge of giving up finally stumbled on the suspect who was hiding near his father’s home.
“And as the exhausted search party was about to give up at 10am, they unbelievably stumbled on the suspect at his hideout, close to his father’s compound,” DCI said.
The suspect tried to evade arrest by jumping into a pit latrine.
“The suspect jumped into a 10-feet pit latrine to save his skin but his mission was short lived. Little did he know that the pit latrine would in a matter of minutes, be his waterloo,” the report further stated.
The locals gathered firewood and other flammable materials which they threw into the pit latrine and set it on fire killing the suspect on the spot.
Detectives have urged locals to shun from taking the law in their own hands and instead report such cases to DCI for quick action.
“Every suspect deserves their day in court,” DCI remarked.
