Suicide Bomber Kills Himself, His Parents After Detonating Explosive In Their Home

Date:

Police in Kisumu are investigating an incident whereby a suspected suicide bomber killed himself together with his parents using an explosive.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at 9.00 pm when  the explosive that John Ondiek alias Pope was carrying exploded.

According to the police report, Ondiek had visited his parents’ home in Katito, Nyakach, Kisumu County.

He found his father  Petro Onyango and his wife Mary Atieno together with their daughter and began questioning them before the explosive that had been tied around his waist went off.

The couple, believed to be about 55 years old, died on the spot. The suspect was pronounced dead on arrival at the Nyakach Sub-county Hospital. The daughter however survived and is still admitted at the hospital.

The suspect is said to have attempted to kill his 16-year old girlfriend in December last year with a locally made explosive in their house over suspicions of infidelity.

It is alleged that he left the explosive in their Katito house which exploded injuring the 16-year old. Following the incident, Ondiek fled the neighborhood and the police have been looking for him since then.

Pope is said to have  left their home for Mombasa and joined the Al-Shabaab militia group five years ago before returning.

The police are handling the matter as terrorism.

“We are trying to establish where he has been for the past months. This is serious and we are pursuing it,” Nyanza police boss Karanja Muiruri said.
