Queen Elizabeth II has died, according to Buckingham Palace, setting off an outpouring of grief in Britain for the 96-year-old monarch, who reigned for 70 years.
The news of her death was reported through the Royal Family Twitter handle which revealed that the queen had died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
“The queen died peacefully at balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmora this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth died peacefully just like her husband Prince Philip popularly known as the duke of Edinburgh.
The queen’s doctors became concerned for her health on the morning of Sept. 8, when she pulled out of a virtual privy meeting. This left many people worried even as she was put under medical condition with her grandsons Prince Harry and Prince William taking care of her.
The death of the Queen comes at a time when the U.K. is transitioning from a deeply controversial prime minister, Boris Johnson, to a new one, Liz Truss, who just took over the job this week. The country faces skyrocketing inflation and the challenge of the biggest war in Europe since 1945.
