A family in Nakuru is crying for justice following the gruesome murder of their 6-year old kin by his step-father.
Zacharia Chege is said to have murdered the minor identified as James Kamau, dismembered him before throwing his body in a pit latrine at JB Estate, Nakuru.
Chege was arrested while playing pool after the body Kamau was retrieved from the pit latrine. He was however present as the police retrieved the body but denied knowing whose it was.
That came a few days after Chege assaulted his wife Norah Kaingoki before their children.
On the fateful night, May 26, Kaingoki decided to leave her home with her other two children, whom she had with the suspect, but Kamau insisted on remaining behind with his step-father.
According to her, the suspect arrived home and found them asleep. He became violent and assaulted her. Kamau pleaded with his step-father to stop hurting his mother and he turned on him leaving him with injuries.
Despite that, the minor stayed behind as his mother and siblings escaped Chege’s wrath to save their lives.
“I left him there and I was hoping that he would take him to hospital for treatment because if we continued to stay, he would have killed all of us. I tried to stop him from hurting my son. I wish he had just told me to return my son to his father instead of killing him,” she told journalists recently.
That night, Kaingoki sought refuge from a good Samaritan and left for her sister’s home in Gilgil two days later after recovering.
She would however call her husband to inquire about the wellbeing of Kamau and she would be told that he was doing fine.
Days later, locals at JB Estate became suspicious of a foul smell that emanated from a pit latrine forcing them to alert the authorities only for the minor’s body to be retrieved.
Kainogi and her sister were informed about what had transpired through a phone call from an anonymous person. The mother of three later went to Mwarika police station where she had been summoned and was able to identify her son from photographs that she was shown, since he was dressed just as she had left him.
“He was a violent person, even neighbors feared him. The photo I was shown really broke my heart. I really can’t tell when he killed my son because that night I escaped and he later communicated and kept assuring me he was okay,” she said.
Kaingoki and Chege met in 2016 while she was expecting Kamau. Kamau’s father denied the pregnancy but Chege accepted her as she was and married her. 6 years later, the suspect became violent and would assault her whenever he was drunk.
The step-father from hell is being held by the police for two weeks as police conduct investigations into the murder.
Kaingoki however fears for her life and that of two children if the suspect is set free.
