Statehouse Under Siege: Sri Lanka Nepotistic President Goes Missing As Thousands Of Protestors take Over His Residence

Date:

Thousands of protesters on Saturday stormed the presidential palace in Sri Lanka to protest over the bad leadership that has seen the country sink into an economic crisis thus making the lives of  citizens very difficult.

The economic crisis has seen the country suffer from shortages of  basic items such as food, fuel  among other necessities.

Videos on social media show thousands of people barging into President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s palace in Colombo. Several others dived into the swimming pool as others found their way into the kitchen.

The protesters are said to have broken the barricade forcing their way into the palace and nearby office to “vent their fury against a leader they hold responsible for the nation’s worst economic crisis.”

A government spokesperson said that he was not aware of the president’s whereabouts.

The country’s prime minister  Ranil Wickremesinghe has since agreed to resign after party leaders  in parliament demanded he should resign together with the embattled president.

The economic hardships have made the country face protests for months thus threatening the president’s dynasties that have ruled Sri Lanka for the past two decades.

Rajapaska’s brother was forced to resign as a prime minister in May after violent protests  erupted forcing him to seek safety at the Naval base. Three other relatives of the president were also forced to resign from their cabinet positions.

Protesters blamed the president and his relatives for throwing the country into chaos through poor management and corruption.
