Standard Media Threatens To Fire Striking Radio Presenters

Date:

On Thursday July 4, all radio stations under Standard Media Group were left playing music as radio presenters and contuinity announcers were a no show.

Presenters at Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Vybez Radio and Berur FM declined to report to duty as usual over unpaid salary arrears and delayed salaries.

The staff converged at their cafeteria instead of reporting to work. The management addressed them, threatening to fire them if they fail to report to their respective work station.

The radio employees had issued a notice of downing their tools last week, should the management give a deaf ear to their demands.

“The matter of unpaid regular salary and mounting arrears as you’re aware is one of urgency. As a department – we need to have this matter addressed,” the staff informed Standard Group’s Management in a letter.

They asked the management to pay the pending salaries in 30% each month until they are cleared.

“Kindly note that in the event of non-payment as proposed above, all programming will be off air on July 3 on all four radio stations until our plight is addressed and a commitment from your end is issued in writing,” the team further stated.

The letter reveals that they have not been paid salaries from between June to August 2023  and February to June 2024. They also demanded to be paid their June 2024 salary fully by July 2, and the same to be consistent moving forward.
