A motion to allow the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) to digitize water meters was unanimously adopted by the Nairobi County Assembly.
Kenyans in Nairobi will benefit from the motion, according to Clay City ward legislator Mwaura Samora. “The action will benefit city dwellers since they will be able to buy water according to their budget.” he says.
Will the water cartels that have taken over the city’s water piping systems be combated by the motion made by Clay City MCA Samora Mwaura?
Nairobi MCAs claim that the action will enable the county to cut down on water theft and waste.
With introduction of the digital meters, you can only pay Nairobi Water if they have provided you with water; otherwise if there’s no water, you will not pay. As opposed to the existing situation, when you are still charged for water even if you don’t use it or have it for the entire month.
Mwaura claims that the technology is consumer-friendly because it only requires payment for what has been utilized.
