Deputy President William Ruto has opened up on why he stopped working with the former prime minister Raila Odinga.
Over a decade ago, Ruto and Raila were great political friends and even formed the famous Pentagon. Other members of the group were ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Tourism CS Najib Balala and Joseph Nyaga, Charity Ngilu also joined the crew. They founded the ODM party.
The group was formed at the height of the 2005 referendum. Raila, Ruto and Mudavadi contested to be flagbearer of the party ahead of 2007 elections but Raila won with Ruto coming third. But by 2012, the group had split with pentagon members leaving the ODM party citing lack of democracy. Raila did not intend to step down for any other member in the 2013 general elections.
Speaking in a campaign rally in Makueni on Thursday August 4, Ruto however said that the real cause of their split was their contradicting religious beliefs.
According to Ruto, Raila had a problem about things relating to God, and him being brought up in a christain family could no longer condone that.
“I pushed this guy in 2007. But when I noticed that he has a problem with things about God, I detached myself from him, I said no. When you hear someone complaining about church construction, saying where are you getting all this money from, what did he want us to do. It it wrong to construct churches?” the second in command posed.
“I evaluated that person. I have been taken to Sunday School. I am a member of AIC. I can’t agree with this person who believes in witchcraft. I left him with Kalonzo telling him to continue pushing him. Kalonzo has struggled with him for 10 years, recently he asked him to return the favor but he told him to go for the interview(running mate interview). Imagine helping someone for 10 years and he bypasses you for the running mate position,”Ruto said.
