Police officers within Laikipia county are investigatingĀ an incident which saw 14 Nanyuki prisoners escape from legal custody.
The men namely Mareri Tetkor who was convicted of murder, Nangoye Lenawaso (murder), Francis Kamau Nduati (robbery with violence), Lereiyo Lekiare (murder), Patrick Fundi (robbery with violence), and James Sike (robbery with violence) all escaped fron Nanyuki prisons under mysterious circumstances.
It has now emerged that these rogue guests of the state cut the door grills in a bid to achieve their prison break.
Following their escape, two prison leaders led by Commissioner General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo on Sunday paid a courtesy call to Nanyuki prison where they assessed the unfortunate situation.
According to a police report filed at the Nanyuki Police Station; at around 02.52 a.m. on Saturday, police officers on patrol in the Likii area responded to gunshots at the Nanyuki GK Prison.
āOfficers from station,DCI and CIPU were mobilized and immediately rushed to the scene map ref 853583 aboutĀ 3km west of the station,ā The police report readsĀ āThey established that 14 prisoners charged with capital offences had escapedĀ from the said prison,ā
According to CitizenĀ TV, the security team then launched a manhunt, which resulted in the arrest of eight prison escapees; six others are said to have escaped and are still at large.
Consequently, Wyckliffe Ogolla gave assurance to the public that all those who escaped will be hunted down and brought to book.
He added that robust measures will be taken in all prisons in a bid to ensure that such a thing never happens again in future.
In the meantime, investigations have been launched not only to find out the circumstances that led to the Nanyuki prisoners escaping but also for chiefs to swing into action to help find the culprits.
