A family from Big Tree in Kiminini constituency, Trans Nzoia County is demanding for justice after their kin was murdered by police officers.
Robert Manyonge met his death after being attacked by a group of police officers on Thursday September 30 at 8pm while walking at the market with a friend.
According to Douglas Momanyi, the survivor of the incident, the two were accosted by a group of police officers who demanded to know what they were doing outside past curfew hours. The two however questioned the officers if 8 pm was within the curfew period.
“It was after we questioned them if the night curfew begins at 8 pm that the police officers began attacking us with kicks and blows,” Momanyi told journalists.
Momanyi however managed to escape from the hands of the police. The move angered the police officers who descended on the deceased with metal rods and wooden sticks.
“The officers concentrated on Manyonge who was arguing with them and that is when I found a chance to escape and ran away leaving him behind,” Momanyi narrated.
The victim was rushed to Kitale County Hospital by his mother where it was established that he had suffered multiple injuries including a broken neck, broken ribs, and more injuries on his entire body with his legs being the most affected.
“When I saw my son, I did not believe my eyes. He was bleeding all over and wreathing in pain. The officers did not even think of taking him to hospital,” Manyonge’s mother said.
“How can men who are supposed to give us security turn on us and be our tormentors?” Leah Jarenga, a sister to the deceased posed.
Manyong’es grandmother said that that was not the first time the police were attacking her grandchild. She said that Manyonge had been wrongfully arrested over claims of stealing alcohol from a pub.
“They arrested him and his wife saying they stole alcohol. In fact, Manyonge was out on bond a fact the local police were not pleased with,” she said.
Area police boss Francis Tumbo confirmed the incident saying they had launched an investigation into the matter.
“The case was reported by the grandmother Grace Mmbone and the DCI were following crucial leads. We will unravel what happened once we are done with the investigations,” Tumbo told journalists.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Kitale County Mortuary.
