Students of Daystar University, Athi River Campus, were on Monday evening cautioned after a leopard that was spotted roaming at the institution.
An email addressed to students from the administrator Carolyne Mwangi, indicated that the leopard had vanished into the thicket near the Dam adjacent to Central stores.
“This is to bring to our attention that a leopard was spotted (22/11/2021), and it vanished into the thicket near the dam adjacent to central stores,” part of the mail read.
Mwangi, who also addressed the community living around the institution, asked the students to avoid the path at night and also move in groups while heading to hostels.
The mail highlighted some of the measures that students should take including clapping, shouting and waving hands in the air incase the animal was to charge at them.
The matter was however reported to the Kenya Wildlife Service for immediate action.
“We have contacted the KWS and a trap is being laid within the campus,” Mwangi stated.
According to the security and logistics personnel, Patrick Dalizu, the stray animal was first spotted by a herder who reported the matter to relevant authorities.
“Yes, a leopard was spotted at the institution on Monday evening by a herder. It is highly likely that it wanted to attack some of the goats that were grazing. So far we have put the necessary measures in place and we have contacted KWS to help us in capturing the leopard,” Dalizu said.
“The leopard was spotted some distance away from the hostels but we cannot take chances. We are confident we shall capture it in the course of the day since KWS officers have already laid traps in and around the campus,” he added.
He further said that a number of wild animals including snakes had been spotted at the institution but they are undertaking measures to keep them off.
