Kirinyaga locals were in for a rude shock after a middle aged woman set ablaze her house and thereafter threw herself into a borehole with her child.
It is not clear what led to her actions but the incident occurred when her husband was away working.
The two were however rescued and rushed to the hospital. They are currently in a stable condition.
According to a witness, he saw photos, probably of the family, outside the burning house and reasoned that someone might have been there before the fire began.
“I asked myself how the person who removed the photos from the house did that if he/she was not there before the fire. Later on, I just thought of opening the borehole to see if there was anybody inside and I saw a woman. The child is also alive,” he said.
According to another witness identified as Kamau Njagi, they were going about work with the woman’s husband when they were informed that his house was on fire.
“He told me that his house was on fire. We hurriedly came here and found the house was completely burnt. The fire fighters however did a good job. They really helped us in containing the fire.
“We thought that the child was inside the house during the fire. We searched thoroughly but we did not find the child,” Njagi said.
