The murder case of Rongo university student Sharon Otieno has taken a new twist with reports emerging that she was in an affair with Migori governor Okoth Obado’s aide Michael Oyamo.
Sharon, believed to be Obado’s lover, was murdered on the night of September 3, 2018 alongside her unborn child and her body dumped in a forest.
According to Police Constable Howard Omwoha, one of the prosecution witnesses, Oyamo confessed that at Uriri police station on September 4, 2018.
In his statement, Oyamo claimed responsibility for Sharon’s pregnancy and admitted that they had disagreed on issues about money a day before her abduction.
On the day that Sharon disappeared, the two had met to solve their issues where Sharon was demanding money to furnish her house and for monthly upkeep.
“As a matter of concern I wanted to know the problem for record purposes. He said she was pregnant for him and wanted Sh600,000 to furnish the house and a total sum of Sh240,000 for monthly upkeep,” Omwaho told the court.
Obado’s aide confessed that before his arrest after being linked to the abduction and murder of the university student. He had gone to the police station to report his kidnapping. The incident allegedly occurred when he was leaving a hotel where he had met with Sharon to discuss their relationship issues.
“Mr Oyamo told me that the previous night –September 3, 2018- at around 8pm he was abducted by three men who went with him and he found himself in Kisii town the following day. Since it was a serious matter I sought to know how it happened.
“Mr Oyamo told me he went to Rongo to meet his girlfriend at Treat House. Later the girlfriend called and said they meet at Graca Hotel. He said the girlfriend was Sharon,” the witness narrated
When Oyamo got at the hotel, Sharon was in a company of a man, who is also a witness in the case. The man called a taxi which arrived with three men on board. They all boarded the taxi with Oyamo occupying the rear seat. After about 200m, it pulled off on the left side of the road. Oyamo was allegedly ordered to board a Toyota Axio that was behind them.
“He told me the men (in the Axio car) had sharp knives and were torturing him demanding a sum of Sh1.5 million. While on the way, he fell unconscious and did not know what transpired until he found himself the following morning at a street in Kisii town. He said he was taken to hospital by members of the public. He did not name the hospital,” said the officer adding that he also claimed to have lost 270,000 in cash a tecno Camon phone during the incident.
Omwaho however told the court that Oyamo’s kidnap was fake. The hearing of the case will proceed on July 28, 2022.
Governor Obado, his aide Oyamo and county government clerk Casper Obiero are the main suspects in the murder of Sharon and her unborn child.
