School On The Spot For Attempting To Buy A Parent’s Silence With A Lucrative Deal In A Child Assault Case

Date:

A school in Narok is on the spot for attempting to buy a parent’s silence by offering her a lucrative deal after her daughter’s arm was broken by a teacher.

Joyline Koikai a student at St. Peters Catholic primary school, Narok, got her arm broken by a teacher who was administering punishment to her and her fellow students for failing to score a certain pass mark in exams on July 14 this year.

Speaking to journalists, Joyline’s mother said that her daughter came home complaining about being punished by a teacher but she dismissed her noting that he was just instilling discipline in her.

“She came home and told me they had been punished and I advised her that it was for her own benefit, only to notice that she kept on using her left arm whenever I assigned her house chores,” she claimed.

A day later the pain in her arm became unbearable  forcing her to undergo a medical examination. X-ray results indicated that her arm had been broken.

The parent confronted the school’s administration over the issue. She revealed that the school offered her a sum of Kshs50,000 and also offered Joyline free education for the whole year in a bid to protect the teacher in question.

“They convened a meeting between the instructor and myself. He offered us Ksh50,000 stating that if the matter escalated, he would not only lose his job but also his career. In addition, the school offered to waive Joyline’s school fees for one academic year so that the matter would be ‘forgotten’,” she said.

She however had made up her mind on reporting the incident to the police. Her daughter is yet to report back to school.

The devastating incident comes barely days after another class 8 pupil of Nyamninia public day and boarding school in Yala was brutally beaten by his teachers for failing to score 400 marks in an exam. The video of the pupil lamenting over his teachers actions and showing his bruises sparked an uproar on social media.

The incident caught the attention of Education CS George Magoha who warned teachers against administering such punishments to students noting that they will be dealt with accordingly.
