Lamu senator Anwar Loitiptip has been accused of assaulting a 32-year old man in Lamu after DP William Ruto concluded his trip in the county.
DP Ruto had been in the county to drum up support for his bottom up economic model as well as the hustler movement.
The matter was reported at the Lamu Central Police Station and recorded under OB number 26/19/10/2021.
It is alleged that Loitiptip assaulted Francis Mugo on Tuesday evening at the Manda Airport Jetty moments after DP Ruto had boarded his flight and left.
According to the victim, Loitiptip harassed him and even threatened to drown him in the Indian Ocean.
“I am disappointed by Senator Loitiptip’s behaviour. He attacked me immediately after DP Ruto boarded his flight and left Manda Airport,” Mugo said.
“He forcefully took my phone, which I was using. In the process, he broke my eyeglasses and injured me in the right hand and left eye. He further harassed me by trying to throw me into the ocean at the jetty but I was lucky he didn’t succeed,” he added.
Mugo’s right hand, left hip and eye were injured in the process. He was treated and discharged from Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital and King Fahad County Hospital.
Mugo is among those who have shown interest in the Lamu senatorial seat through the UDA ticket.
Lamu County Police Commander Moses Murithi confirmed the incident while saying that it is currently being investigated.
“I can confirm that an assault report was made and investigations are ongoing. So far, no arrests have been made,” said Muriithi.
Loitiptip has however denied claims of assaulting Mugo while saying the information is malicious and incorrect.
“That man is just looking for sympathy and to tarnish my name but I will just (ignore) him. You can imagine how unfair it is for someone to come and gate-crash my function, then try to frame me,” the senator said.
