Ruto Thanks Bishop Ole Sapit For Denying Raila A Chance To Speak In Church

Date:

Deputy president William Samoei Ruto has come out strongly to support a recent decision by the Anglican Bishop Ole Sapit to deny politicians a chance to speak in church.

According to William Ruto, churches ought to be left for prayers alone as opposed to engaging in unnecessary political activities.

“I fully agree  with church bishops for blocking politicians from addressing the church since churches are meant for worshiping God as opposed to fulfilling our own private affairs.

At the same time, DP Ruto extended this congratulatory message to the catholic church whose leaders on Wednesday came out to dismiss politicians planning to go do politics within the church precincts in future.

“I also agree with the catholic church leaders who yesterday came out openly to state that churches should not be meant for politicians.” Said Ruto.

His sentiments came just a few days after Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya Jackson Ole Sapit blocked Raila, Mudavadi, Wetangula and other politicians from speaking at a church function in Butere.

Sapit was attending the consecration of Rev. Rose Okeno as the Bishop of the Butere Diocese at the Butere Girls Secondary School Kakamega County where several politicians were in attendance.

Apart from the three party leaders, other politicians present included Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Kitui governor Charity Ngilu, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala among others.

The Sunday September 12th event was particularly interesting as the Anglican archbishop stated that he would not allow any political comments during the church service.

Ole Sapit further disclosed that leaders would only be allowed to worship at the church and leave quietly just like other members of the congregation.

The decree by Anglican church leader did not augur well with a number of leaders who had hoped to atleast address the congregants in a bid to sell to them whatever they had.

As a result, majority of them such as ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula opted to walk out and do other things.

The ANC leader and his Ford Kenya counterpart boarded their chopper to Murang’a where they attended another church function.

However, Raila and his brigade stayed put until the end of the church service prompting Ole Sapit to commend the former Prime Minister for his patience.

While addressing the press after the church service, Raila’s allies were quick to condemn Mudavadi and Wetangula for walking out of the function.
