President William has shared the story of Brian Kipchumba, during his speech in the World’s Government Summit in Dubai.
Ruto met Kipchumba in mid January. The student showed the head of state how he makes over Kshs30,000 in a month while working remotely.
“I want to show you my success through the digital platforms. As you can see there is my Remotask account. I have been working online since December 26, 2023. The total amount of money I have earned is $284 which is about KSh 45,000. Minus the taxes, it comes to about KSh 40,000,” Kipchumba explained to Ruto back in January.
In his speech to world leaders, Ruto shared Brian’s story while emphasizing on the need to empower youths with technology and innovation.
“When I went to one village, and this speaks to the power of energy, technology and youth in our continent, I went to one collage in a village, 400km from Nairobi in Kaiboi. I met this young man Brian, a diploma student. Because of the internet, he has a computer and electricity, he now works for an AI company in Germany.
“Mind you, Brian does not have a passport and has never been to the city of Nairobi but because of technology, internet and electricity, he now works not for a supermarket but for an AI company in Germany,” the head of state said.
At the same time, the president lauded Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has employed 23,000 Kenyans who are working from Nairobi.
“We must not allow a fear of future unknowns to deprive brilliant youngsters like Brian of opportunities.
“If ever there was a case for great urgency in formulating a framework for the deployment of AI and Machine Learning, young Brian and his cohort place it in very sharp focus,” Ruto said.
