Ruto Postpones UDA Elections

Date:

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Saturday November 18 called off grassroots elections scheduled for December.

In a statement, UDA stated the postponement following consultation with President William Ruto and other leaders from the party.

‘Following a deliberative meeting of UDA’s National Steering Committee chaired by the Party leader, H.E. President, William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, the Party has resolved to postpone the scheduled December 9th elections to 12th, 19th, and 26th April 2024, respectively, ” the party announced.

Following the postponement UDA tasked the leaders to continue with sensitization exercise.

“All candidates and members of the Party are encouraged to continue sensitizing and recruiting members to the Party.”

The grassroots polls will however be held in April 12, 19 and 26, 2024.

UDA grassroot polls are expected to help popularize the party ahead of 2027 General Elections.

Ruto is expected to use the party to defend his presidential seat.

Party Secretary General Cleophas Malala was leading the sensitization drive.

However he faced opposition from a section of leaders following his hard stance.

For instance, Malala encountered criticism from the western region after pushing other parties to fold and join UDA.

Amani National Congress affiliated with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi rejected the push.

Ford Kenya led by Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula also dismissed Malala’s suggestion.

At the same time, leaders from Mt Kenya region demanded a lion’s share of UDA positions.

Led by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Mt Kenya leaders demanded the party vice chairperson position and Secretary General post.

It not clear whether their demands will be accepted by other party members.
