Deputy president William Samoei Ruto seems to be the new crybaby in the Kenyan politics after finding himself where the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga was back in 2013 and 2017.
Recent actions by the deputy president have revealed a man shaken beyond redemption which has left many people asking why the panic despite being on the campaign mode for the last 4 years.
According to a local publication, William Ruto in less than a month has written two protest letters to the Chief Justice Martha Koome and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
William Ruto’s letter to IEBC was particularly highlighting their concern about the involvement of Cabinet Secretaries in campaigns ahead of the 2022 general election.
Particularly, the UDA team raised complaints about interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi and the ICT cabinet secretary Joe Mucheru for allegedly being involved in active political campaigns.
The letter was written in the wake of a meeting in Nyamira organised by opposition chief Raila Odinga and attended by a number of cabinet secretaries.
Back in 2017 Raila Odinga made a similar complaints to the IEBC and even raised concern about the credibility of the IEBC to run the general election however his pleas fell on deaf ears as DP Ruto not only castigated him but also told him to leave Matiangi alone (wachana na Matiangi). The fact that Ruto supported oppression when he was a beneficiary is a matter that makes his concerns sound like hypocrisy.
At the same time, there are those who took on the deputy president for writing a letter to the IEBC where they registered their complaints with the commission.
According to one lawyer Donal Kipkorir, Ruto used to chest thump over how he does not care about whoever runs the IEBC as long as he has got the numbers. He therefore decided to ask Ruto’s side why they were suddenly scared of how the IEBC is operated.
Specifically, lawyer Kipkorir pointed out an earlier sentiment where William Ruto and his allies said that they do not care about the leadership of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission even if the same is taken over by Raila’s elder brother Mr. Oburu Odinga.
“They reminded us umpteenth times that they have god and the people and don’t care if Oburu Odinga was the Chairman of IEBC, so why the sudden panic? Has their god and their people deserted UDA,” asked Donald Kipkorir.
In the meantime, Martha Koome was forced to respond to Ruto’s allies and Garissa member of parliament Aden Duale who accused her of interfering with independent institutions.
According to these leaders, the chief justice would be compromised in the event of a presidential petition in 2022.
“Madam Chief Justice and the President of the Supreme Court, you cannot wear two hats that you are preparing elections and when the elections are over, you want to wear another hat as an independent Judicial officer in the determination of the presidential election.
“She must follow what the constitution says. We are going to make a formal complaint as UDA in the next two days. She is out of order. You either resign as Chief Justice and be part of our competitors. We have no problem with that. You can give them legal advice,” he demanded
