Rishi Sunak: Interesting Details Of “Newly Elected” UK Prime Minister With Kenyans Roots

Date:

Rishi Sunak is set to become the new prime minister of Britain once his predecessor formally submits her resignation to King Charles III. This is after he secured the Conservatives party’s leadership.

He sailed to the top after his competitor Penny Mordaunt pulled out of the race which sought to find  Liz Truss’s replacement after her dramatic resignation that occurred on Thursday last week.

Sunak will be the first person with Kenyan roots and of Hindu origin to take up the position. He will make history by becoming the youngest person to become Britain’s Prime Minister in two centuries.

The 42-year-old first landed a role in the European administration in 2015 when he was voted in as an MP for Richmond.

Two years later, he was among the supporters of the British move to exit the European Union, popularly known as Brexit, during the 2016 referendum.

He later landed a role under Theresa May when he became a junior minister.

During Boris Johson’s reign, Sunak landed his major role in government in 2019 after being appointed as the Chief Secretary of the Treasury and subsequently as Chancellor in 2020.

Away from politics, Sunak is a Business and Finance professional.

His father, Yashvir Sunak was born in Kenya during the pre-colonial time while his mother Usha Sunak was born in Tanzania. Their parents(Sunak’s grand parents) who are originally from India migrated to the East African countries.

In the 1960s, the two families relocated to Southampton in the United Kingdom separately. Later Yashvir and Usha got married and were blessed with Sunak who was born in May 1980 in a Southampton Hospital.

He is the eldest of his three siblings.
