Rigathi Gachagua Announces His Next Move After Losing His ‘Hard Earned’ Kshs200 Million To The Government

Date:

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has been dealt with a huge blow after the High Court ordered that Kshs200 million of his wealth be surrendered to the government.

According to a ruling by Judge Esther Maina  on Thursday July 28, the lawmaker was unable to explain how he acquired the money in question from government agencies and county governments.

The money, which is held in three bank accounts under Gachagua’s name at Rafiki Bank Sacco, is believed to be proceeds of crime, a move that saw the accounts get frozen by the high court in 2020, pending the hearing and determination of the case that had been filed the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA).

The first account is said to be holding a total of Kshs165 million, the second one has  Kshs35 million and the third one contains Kshs773,228. A fourth account under the name of Jenne Enterprise Limited, which is believed to Gachagua’s accomplice in the crime has a total of Kshs1,138,142.

According to investigations by ARA, Gachagua and Jenne were involved in a money laundering scheme. The frozen funds were drawn from Ministry of Lands (Kenya Informal Settlements Programme), State Department for Special Planning, Ministry of Health, Bungoma County government, Mathira Constituency Development Fund, Nyeri County government and the National Irrigation Board.

Evidence tabled in court indicated that Gachagua received Kshs5.8 billion within 7 years in his bank accounts through his various business entities that entered into supply contracts with government agencies.

Following the Judge Maina’s decision, Gachagua has said that he will appeal the High Court’s decision complaining that he was not accorded a fair hearing

Speaking during the deputy presidential debate days ago, Gachagua however maintained that his bank accounts did not receive any billions as it had been alleged and especially when working as a government officer.

He said that he made the money during Kibaki’s time when he was not in government. He blamed the state for his woes noting that he was being sought after because of his political stand and even questioned why they did not go after him when he was supporting President Kenyatta since he still had the money in his accounts.

“My account did not receive Sh5 billion; that is propaganda. The money that I have is well documented. This is money I made during the reign of Mwai Kibaki when the economy was thriving. I made over Sh200 million and invested in an account and that account has been running for the last eight years,” he said.
