Busia senator Okiya Omatatah has brushed off efforts by President William Ruto to engage Kenyans after 3 weeks of intense protests against the government.
Speaking at Uhuru Park on Sunday during an event that had been organized by activists to honor those who were killed in the protests, Omatath said that Ruto can only remain in office if he is able to resurrect those who died .
“The only thing the president can do and have me accept is if he can resurrect those who were killed. If he can’t he just has to pack and go. Nothing he is doing can measure up to the lives that were lost,” he said.
“So far you have seen nobody, not even the askari has been held accountable for the mayhem that occurred. So the president and his militia jus have to go,”he added.
Omtatah further said that by engaging Kenyans on online platforms, the president was just trying to gain legitimacy, which he already lost.
“If you listen to the X space, there is nothing transformative. He was just trying to manage the crisis that he is in right now. He wants to cling on to power and that is why he is trying whatever it takes,” he said.
He also noted that it will only take pressure and firce for Ruto to resign as president.
“Like the Finance Bill he was told not to sign, but it was until people stormed parliament that he got the sense not to sign it,” he said.
The Busia senator also slammed the president’s move to form an 8-member task force for the forensic audit of the public debt saying it is unconstitutional.
Omatatah said that he will be heading to court on Monday to challenge the directive.
“We have to quash it. The auditor general is supposed to do that work not a private entity appointed by the president. He is just wasting tax payer’s money and buying time. Giving them three months to do what?” He wondered.
He went on to accuse the first in command of trying to govern the country outside the, adding that he won’t allow him to continue like that.
