The high court has temporarily paused the implementation of gazette notice on the of new charges that were imposed on ID cars and passports.
High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi suspended the charges following a petition that was filed by Nakuru surgeon Magare Gikenyi.
Gikenyi moved to court after Interior CS announced that Kenyans will be charged to get and replace ID cardS.
“A conservatory order be and is hereby issued suspending Gazette Notices No. 15239-15242 dated 6th November 2023 and/or any other document purporting to give authority to increase or review the charges/fees/levies specified therein pending the hearing and determination of this Application inter-partes,” Mugambi ordered.
In his petition, the surgeon has sued CSs Njuguna Ndungu (Treasury) and Kithure Kindiki (Interior), the National Assembly and the Attorney General.
In the gazette notice, the Interior CS said those applying for IDs for the first time will pay Kshs1,000. Those who seek to replace lost IDs will be charged Kshs2,000, a 20% increment from the initial cost.
In the same notice, it was stated that replacing a lost passport would cost Kshs2,000 from the initial Kshs8,000 while the fee for a 50-page diplomatic passport was doubled to Kshs15,000.
