Fire razed down property of unknown value at the famous Gikomba market, which is situated on the east side of the heart of Nairobi town.
The inferno, that its cause is yet to be established, started on the Southern part of the open-air market, opposite the Jua Kali section and adjacent to Muthurwa Primary School, located in Pumwani.
It is yet a mystery as to why all the fire incidences that have been witnessed in the market do happen at night, and more so at dawn.
Some people have, however, been blaming other traders for being behind the fire. In today’s incidence, the eyewitnesses admitted that while the fire was razing, many people could do nothing but just look on.
Kamukunji Member of Parliament Hon. Yusuf Hajji broke the news of the dawn inferno and expressed disappointment that it is becoming a perennial thing that traders would be losing their property under unclear circumstances.
“Saddened that the section of the market has been gutted by yet another fire and traders are to face incalculable losses,” Yusuf wrote.
“A fierce fire is raging in the southern part of the Gikomba Market opposite Jua Kali and adjacent to Muthurwa Primary School in Pumwani. Firefighters from various government units, including the KDF, are on the ground battling to bring the blaze under control,” the MP, whose constituency Gikomba market is situated, added.
Gikomba market is known for cheap household goods, and particularly second-hand clothes.
This is not the first time that fire has razed down the market. Just a couple of months ago, another fire gutted down a section of the market and left many families jobless as millions of wares and premises were brought to ashes.
There have been attempts by leaders to address the perennial issue with the governments, but their efforts have been fruitless.Â
