The pelting of Raila Odinga’s chopper with stones when he had gone to condole with Mzee Kibor’s family continues to stir reactions.
Leaders across different political divides as well as common citizens have condemned the incident but some of Raila’s supporters have blamed DP William Ruto and his allies for mobilizing the youths to act harshly towards the ODM leader.
In a video clip that has surfaced online, one of the supporters is heard threatening to deal with DP Ruto, after Raila’s humiliation in Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.
The man in the video went ahead to shame DP Ruto’s tribe while warning the DP that he should just campaign in his house after the Friday incident.
“Those are nonsense. I want to tell William Ruto’s followers and the senator and governor who organized the incident William Ruto will campaign in his house. We should not see him step in Nyanza. Here in Nairobi we are going to deal with him,” the man said.
He claimed that Ruto’s community has been in power for 15 years but his tribesmen are still struggling because of corruption.
“The William Ruto you are supporting squandered money for Kimwarer dam and today you are suffering. I want to tell you you won’t threaten Raila Amollo Odinga, and we are not shaken, if it is about stones we know it better, you will know Raila Odinga is not your agemate” he said.
The video has received wide criticism with netizens calling for his arrest in what seems like hate speech.
On the other hand, the National Police service also condemned the stoning of Raila’s chopper and entourage saying that it was a breach of peace.
“The National Police Service condemns the ugly criminal incident and appeals for tolerance and respect for competitors in this season of politics as we approach elections. Acts of violence targeting opponents shall not be tolerated,” NPS said in a statement.
Following the incident, the Inspector General of Police issued firm instructions to the Rift Valley Regional Police Commander to urgently take decisive action against the perpetrators of the violence, including all those who will be implicated for planning and organizing the violence.
