ODM leader Raila Odinga narrated to the Kimilili residents about his childhood encounter with Elijah Masinde Wa Nameme.
Wa Nameme was a powerful Luhya prophet and freedom fighter who founded the famous Dini Ya Msambwa sect.
He was also a soccer player and is remembered for kicking a ball to the sky which never returned.
According to Raila, when he was still a child, his father sent him together with some of his employees to pick Elijah from his Kimilili home and take him to Kisumu.
“Long ago, before we got independence, Jaramogi sent me and his people, his driver here in Kimilili to pick Elijah Masinde W Nameme and take him to Kisumu. I was a child then. We found him, we ate and drank and then left,” Raila told Kimilili residents during the Azimio la umoja campaigns in Bungoma county on Friday.
Along the way, they almost fell into the River Nzoia as they were crossing the bridge but Elijah called upon God and they survived the incident.
“I sat with him in the front seat with the driver. As we approached River Nzoia at the bridge, the lorry slid and we almost fell in water but Wa Nameme beat his chest calling God thrice, the vehicle lost control and went into the bushes,” the ODM leader narrated.
Raila further said that the Luhya prophet engaged in prayers and they finally managed to arrive in Kisumu safely.
“Wa Nameme got out of the car and picked some grass in the bush and chewed it. He then lifted his hand, faced Mt. Elgon and prayed. After he was done with prayers he told us to enter the vehicle so that we could proceed with the journey. He assured us that nothing would happen,” Raila said.
He added that among the many things he talked about, Wa Nameme revealed that the liberator of the Luhya nation will come from the lake.
“We went to Kisumu. He said lots of things but he said that the liberation of this place shall come from Lake Victoria. Those are not words you can joke with. It is true,” he added.
