Raila Odinga decided to surprise a total stranger in Githunguri, Kiambu county who invited him to attend his birthday party through a text message.
Gideon Gachuki picked Raila’s number on the internet and he decided to invite him to attend his birthday party as a joke.
Gachuki also gave the former Prime Minister directions to his home in Githunguri in his text message to him.
The ODM leader ultimately decided to make his way to Githunguri to surprise Gachuki on his birthday.
Raila traveled to Gachuki’s home in a lean entourage not to attract big crowds, he was accompanied by Kiambu governor James Nyoro.
Photos of Raila attending Gachuki’s birthday party were only shared by ODM National youth coordinator Benson Musungu.
“This young man from Githunguri picked Raila’s number online, sent him a message inviting him for a birthday turning 22. Well the message caught Jakom’s attention, who caught him and his family by surprise when he drove into their compound with a small car.
They didn’t believe it but yes , it was H.E Raila Odinga in their compound. Happy Birthday Gideon Gachuki,” wrote Benson Musungu.
Raila has been keen to make inroads in Mt. Kenya region where he has received least support in previous presidential election.
The ODM leader now enjoys the support of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kikuyu political leaders allied to him as well several tycoons from the region.
Even though he has support of those leaders from Central Kenya, Raila was told to go on the ground himself to familiarize with voters.
Raila’s charm offensive in Mt. Kenya has seen him make several trips to the region in recent days as well as meet delegations in Nairobi.
Even though attending Gideon Gachuki’s birthday party in Githunguri was a private function, one can’t help but see the political implications it has on Raila’s quest to woo Mt. Kenya voters.
