The contest for the Nairobi gubernatorial race is heating up day by day as the August 9 general elections continue to draw close.
So far the contest seems to be a two horse race between Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja and Polycarp Igathe, the Chief Commercial Officer of Equity Bank Group. Igathe also worked as Nairobi’s deputy governor but resigned months later citing lack of trust from his boss, former governor Mike Sonko
Sakaja has settled on Absa’s Chief Operating Officer James Njoroge Muchiri as his running mate.
On the other hand, Igathe and the entire Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance settled on prof Philip Kaloki, a wiper party member and former Kibwezi mp, as the running mate.Â
“Governor Candidate Nairobi is Polycarp Igathe and will be deputized by Prof. Philip Kaloki. The Senate candidate is ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna, and the Women Rep candidate will be Esther Passaris,” Raila announced.
Blogger and Kileleshwa MCA seat hopeful Robert Alai is however not contented with the choice of Kaloki as the Deputy governor of Nairobi.
He is suggesting that Igathe should pick a woman as his running mate so that his candidature in the gubernatorial race can be taken seriously.
According to Alai, the most suitable woman for the position is Citizen TV news anchor Yvonne Okwara Matole.
“If Igathe wants me and others to take him as a serious gubernatorial candidate, he should have a woman as a running mate. I wonder why he doesn’t see this sense. I propose Yvonne Okwara to be the running mate. I don’t know if she has ever considered politics,” Alai shared on Twitter.
It is however not clear if Okwara has ever expressed interest in vying for a political seat.
