Roots party presidential candidate Prof. George Wajackoya has quickly gained popularity among Kenyans within the last few months.
Wajackoya who is seeking to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta is keen on making intense and never seen before reforms in the country.
He however did not just wake to be where he is today. His journey began from being a street urchin. Wajackoya found himself in the streets after his parents separated when he was young. He was brought up by his paternal grandparents in Mumias, Kakamega county.
His story changed after was given shelter, together with other street children, by the Hare Krishna temple. By then he had completed his primary school education.
“Initially I was a chokoraa here in Nairobi then I was educated by J.J. Kamotho after A- levels I did not pass, I did not have enough brains to go to the university so I joined the police as a police constable. I became an inspector of the police then Dr. Ouko died, I was put in charge of investigations, that landed me into trouble, I was put in jail, I was jailed at the city mortuary and I inhaled some kind of asthma that I have until today,” he narrated in a recent interview.
Wajackoya landed in trouble because of being curious and very inquisitive about Robert Ouko’s murder.
He later managed to escape through the United Kingdom embassy and moved to the United Kingdom where he spent more than 20 years, before migrating to the US. Wajackoya was forced to flee Kenya because he did not feel safe.
In the United Kingdom, he secured two jobs that funded his further studies.
“During that time I was a gravedigger, security guard and I went to school everyday. My accent betrayed me to get jobs at proper law firms so I opened my law firm to deal with immigration,” Wajackoya said.
The politician has several degrees, Masters and honorary doctorate in law under his name after studying in various universities in the United kingdom.
“I was in the university of Wolverhampton where I did my Bachelor’s, I did my Masters at University of Warwick, another Masters at University of London school of Rental and African Studies, I went to Westminster university , Wild University service and I became a lawyer of very high repute not only in UK but a European human rights,” the presidential hopeful said.
Wajackoya then became a lecturer and it was at that particular point that he began interacting with Raila and the likes of Koigi Wamwere.
“I started teaching and then it is at that particular time that we started fighting for the freedom you guys have here, we helped Raila Odinga, I shipped in Koigi Wamwere, I brought in Dr. Leaky, Denis Akumu and I became a nationalist,” he said
Wajackoya returned to Kenya in 2010 and set up his law firm, Luchiri and Co. advocates and in 2021 he announced his presidential bid for the August 9, 2022 general elections.
