The Kenya Power and Lighting Company has rolled out a free update of token meters, targeting 7.4 million tokens across the country.
The exercise targets customers on prepaid meters.
“All customers on Kenya Power’s prepaid meters(token meters) will be required to update their meters to enable them continue enjoying access electricity,” Kenya Power said in a statement.
“The exercise is part on an ongoing global exercise that targets all prepaid meters that use Standard Transfer Specification-a universal method to transfer tokens to prepaid meters while ensuring the security of the generated token,” read the statement.
The exercise is expected to end in August 2024, with those who would not have updated their token meters suffering consequences.
“A total of 7.4 token meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the token offer after the deadline date. Because of this, we have put in n place elaborate measures to ensure that our customers are fully empowered and assisted to update their meters,” Kenya power CEO Joseph Siror said.
To ensure that the exercise is a success, Kenya power has launched a campaign dubbed ‘Update meter yako.’
To update the meters, customers will receive two codes from KPLC, one for resetting and the other for updating, through SMS.
