Police have arrested a leader of an armed gang that robbed and gang-raped a nominated MCA, a school principal, among other victims in Nyamira county On October 23.
The suspect, Joseph Otieno Kevuva, was arrested in Kondele, Kisumu before being escorted to Nyamira county DCI headquarters, for interrogations after being positively identified by the victims.
The police are still pursuing 10 other suspects who are on the loose.
The disturbing incident of October 23 occurred at Keroka’s Kierira village, when the armed thugs stormed a homestead, placing it under siege for 7 hours, “robbing, gang-raping and gang-defiling scores.”
The gang who were armed with a pistol, machetes and other crude weapons.
“In the abominable incident that involved the attack of over 13 victims found within the homestead, assorted mobile phones, over Sh130,000 in cash and more hundreds of thousands withdrawn from ATM banks were stolen,” part of a statement by DCI read.
“In the report booked at Keroka Police Station in Masaba North, Nyamira County, a female nominated MCA, a Principal at a local high school, a CEC in Nyamira County Govt, a Kenya Prisons officer and a nurse at Nyamira County Hospital fell victim. Other victims included a 80-year-old woman, a college and a high school student,” DCI further revealed.
The gang is said to have subjected the victims to beatings and death threats, before forcing themselves on them.
“The gang members forced themselves into three of the women in turns, before escaping with their loot after 7hrs of inflicting untold terror and trauma on the hostages. Reportedly, the incident happened from 9pm to 4am on the fateful night,” DCI said.
Investigations into the matter were launched on October 24 after the crime was filed with the authorities. The crime scene was also processed for crucial leads.
“The victims were attended in various hospitals in the county and samples taken from the sexually abused victims,.” DCI further stated.
Further investigations are ongoing to bring the entire gang to book.
