A police officer is Siaya County has lost his life after being ambushed by unknown assailants on Monday morning while escorting KCSE exams.
The deceased was in the company of his colleague and a center manager. The trio were ferrying exams to Mahero Secondary School, in Alego Usonga.
According to witnesses, the assailants were armed with crude weapons, descended on the trio after they alighted from the school bus that had transported them to get the exam papers, a few metres from the Mahero examination center.
The bus could not drop them to the school because of the poor state of the road.
In the incident, the other police officer was left with injuries but the center manager managed to escape.
The injured officer was rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital, while the body of the deceased was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary.
Siaya County Commissioner said that investigations are underway to bring the suspects to book.
“The thugs escaped with the officer’s firearms; AK47 and MP5. Officers are investigating the crime. The Center Manager ran for his safety while the other officers struggled with the suspected thugs. Sadly, one office died on the spot,” the police report revealed.
