A police officer has been hailed for returning Kshs450,000 belonging to a couple who were involved in a road accident.
Timothy Njuguna, his wife Martha Muthoni and their child were involved in a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Friday, December 24 as they headed to Mombasa for the festive season.
The accident occurred around Maungu area when their vehicle collided with a lorry and the money was left in their car after they were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.
According to the police, Kshs450,000 was recovered from the accident scene an hour later after Njuguna informed them that they had had some money in the vehicle.
Locals however had attempted to steal the money and other valuables but the police intervened just in time.
Maungu police officer in charge of the traffic department, Inspector Job Oyagi handed the couple their money on Sunday, December 26, at the hospital where they are being treated.
“When we got to the hospital in Maungu, the man told us that he had money in his car and he had not seen it. We decided to rush to the scene and we found people ransacking the vehicle. Some wanted to steal items from that car,” Oyagi said.
“We did not find the battery of the car. So we decided to search the people who we found there and also look inside the car and we found the money which totalled to Ksh450,000,” the police officer added.
The couple had planned to deposit the money in a bank once they arrived in Mombasa since they did not have the time to do so before the journey.
“We had worked from morning to evening and when it got dark, we didn’t have time to deposit that money so we decided to go home and deposit the money there.
“When we were near Voi at Maungu area, that is when we got into an accident. I sustained minor injuries and when I was able to walk, I went to find my husband and our child,” Muthoni told the press.
