Two people are in police custody in Rongo, Migori county for allegedly marrying off a school going 16-year-old girl.
The middle aged girl is a Form Two student at Mbani Secondary School.
According to a report from Rongo Sub-County Hospital, a 30-year-old man picked up the girl from her home in North Kamagambo to take her to a “special place”
The man identified as Giftophila Odoyo is said to have sealed a marriage agreement with the girl’s family. All this time the girl was not aware of what was happening.
Unknown to the girl, he then decided that they go for a HIV test at one of the hospital before proceeding to his home in Homa Bay County.
Feeling suspicious, the health practitioner (nurse) who realized that the girl was underage, is said to have alerted the police about the marriage.
As a result, police officers intercepted the man and the school girl while they were on their way to the man’s home in Homa Bay.
The uncle of the minor was also arrested for marrying off the school going underage girl.
Mrs. Sofi Odumo, a child activist working with Lulu Foundation, expressed dismay over the incident saying: “Such acts cannot be tolerated.”
She urged police to also arrest and prosecute the parents of the girl for allowing her to be married off.

Cases of parents marrying off young girls to the elderly have been common of late, with police officers rescuing these girls from the predator men. Just recently, a class seven girl that was married by a 40 year old man in Lamu was rescued by the police.
The suspects are currently detained at the Rongo Police Station awaiting to be charged in a court of law.
