A 24-year old Rwandan woman, believed to be a model, risks two years in jail for dressing indecently in public.
Liliane Mugabekazi was arrested on August 7 after attending a concert of a French Musician a week earlier, while dressed in a ‘see me through’ cloth.
Photos circulating on social media showed that she completed her look with a coat.
Prosecutors have accused her of committing a serious crime and want her to stay in remand for thirty days.
“She attended the concert while wearing clothes that reveal her private parts… clothes that we call shameful. It is on these serious grounds that we ask the court to remand Mugabekazi for 30 days,” the prosecutors said.
The woman is accused of public indecency and some of government officials have backed the move to have her arrested and prosecuted.
“The current issue of our young men and women who drink and drug themselves unconsciously, appearing in public literally naked is objectionable. I support the efforts… to address it,” former Rwandan Justice Minister Johnston Busingye said. He currently serves as the country’s ambassador to Britain.
Several other citizens have however protested the move to have Mugabekazi arrested. They have signed a petition calling for justice towards the young woman.
“I sign this because never in life and in this era should a woman be told how to wear or to live their lives! I simply can never understand this,” Ingabire Greta said in a tweet.
“The talibans have now infiltrated @Rwandapolice. Where is the law that sanctions what you are calling nudity? You should ban all the nudity content from TV shows in Rwanda. Otherwise, you are persecuting Liliane Mugabekazi,” another citizen slammed the police.
Here are some of her photos.
