There have been mixed reactions since the Catholic bishops announced that they were willing to mediate talks between the president and his deputy.
While weighing in on the matter, the Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has criticized the church for wanting to hold the talks yet they had banned politics in church.
“Confusion Galore! How do church leaders want politics out of church but want in to mediate political disputes?!” Otiende questioned.
In a tweet he further bashed the church for not intervening on time when the government began splitting in 2018.
“Where were they when the nation was tearing down the middle in 2018?! Trying times to be a faithful,” Otiendo wrote on his Twitter account.
On Wednesday this week through a press conference, the bishops said that they were concerned with the fall out between President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto.
“We are deeply concerned that if this open disagreement between the President and the Deputy President is taken up by their supporters, the trickle-down effect it could generate across the Country will be dire to even contemplate,” the bishops said in their statement.
23 of them had gathered in Nairobi under the banner of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB).
The bishops said that the public exchanges between the president and his deputy might throw the country into instability as the 2022 general elections approach.
“The public exchanges that are being witnessed are dangerous for the prevailing peace and tranquility in the Country and cannot be taken lightly. They are already creating anxiety among the people and have potential to ignite political violence if not addressed with immediate effect,” they said.
Their offer to mediate talks between the two leaders of great national importance was welcomed by DP Ruto who said that he was ready any time he will be called upon.
