Outgoing governor Cornel Rasanga Amoth has thrown his weight behind the 2022 gubernatorial hopeful Siaya senator James Orengo.
According to Rasanga who compared the position to having shoe laces, he made it clear that the former prime minister gave him those shoe laces and that he will only give them to James Orengo.
Rasanga also defended Raila Odinga and the Orange party against allegations of issuing direct nominations in Siaya county to some preferred candidates.
“Look here as far as am concerned, Orengo is likely to fit into my shoes. When i was telling you people that Jakom had the shoe laces of the spare shoe , that is what i said.
“Now those shoe laces have been released to me so i will be releasing them to who if not James Orengo and it is loud and clear.” Said Rasanga amidst cheers from those who were around.
In the meantime, Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga Amoth had last year vowed to only throw his weight behind a candidate that has not been plotting for his downfall.
While speaking in a local media station, Mr. Rasanga expressed his dissatisfaction on certain leaders without necessarily mentioning names.According to him, he would only rally behind an aspirant who has always supported his administration during his two terms in office.
The 2022 Siaya gubernatorial race seems to be the next big thing in Siaya with words going round that it might attract various leaders who are very close to the Right Honorable Raila Amollo Odinga.
Some of the leaders who have so far declared their interests in the seat are Siaya Senator James Orengo, Ugunja legislator Opiyo Wandayi, former police spokesman Mr. Charles Owino and former aspirant Hon. Nicholas Odero Gumbo who gave Mr. Rasanga a run for his money during the 2017 elections.
Of the mentioned candidates, it was not very clear who the outgoing Governor for Siaya County Mr. Cornel Rasanga would back as his successor come 2022 but now it is evident that he was referring to senator Orengo.
However, his decision to back Mr. Orengo is not going well with the locals since Orengo has been accused of forfeiting his oversight role as the senator with the hope of being backed by the incumbent.
Whether his support for Senator James Orengo will influence Siaya voters is a matter of wait and see.
