Only 56 people from Migingo are expected to take part in the next year’s general elections. This is after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) revealed that it is targeting to register 20 new voters on the island before the end of the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Nyatike sub-county election manager Neville Okumu revealed that the electoral body is planning to hold a voter registration exercise in Migingo. He noted that they are currently working on an elaborate plan to undertake the exercise.
Okumu said that they are aware of the controversies surrounding the island, therefore, they will work closely with security officers in Kenya while undertaking the registration exercise.
He revealed that the IEBC is in constant communication with the security officers and he is optimistic that all the burning issues regarding the area will be addressed before they start the voter registration on the island.
The IEBC official noted that they previously faced a few challenges during the voter registration exercise in the area, but the issues were later resolved and they managed to register voters.
The much-contested island at the moment has 36 registered voters. This means that if the IEBC reaches its target, only 56 people will be allowed to take part in the next year’s elections.
