At least one person died Sunday and several others injured after chaos erupt in Kenol, Murang’a when youths clashed ahead of Deputy President William Ruto’s visit.

The police said Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke youths clashed at Kenol on the Thika-Murang’a highway on Sunday morning.

Murang’a South Deputy County Commissioner Mawira Mungania confirmed the death of one person and said more police officers had been deployed in the area to quell the tension.

“One person has been killed and we have several others injured,” Mungania said.

Chaos began after youths blocked roads at Kenol, and started engaging the rival groups in running battles.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances under which one person died in the chaos.

Several vehicles were also vandalized, as the main highway to Nyeri remained impassable for several hours.

The Deputy President was scheduled to preside over a fundraising event in Kenol, at 9:30 am at the AIPCA church hosted by area MP Alice Wahome and Kiharu MP Ndidi Nyoro.

It is the second time Ruto’s visit to Muran’ga has been marred with violence.

Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata who witnessed the chaos asked the Deputy President to always liaise with the area residents before visiting the county.

“Stop this power struggle, it’s causing the Nation too much trouble. Endangering lives of innocent ones.”, Bunny (Power strugglers). Passed Kenol on my way to church in Muranga.

“Saw chaos among the youth ahead of some political visit. We heed HE advise and work for the people first,” noted Kang’ata.

In a video seen by Sonko News, a woman alleges that the chaos was sponsored by local leaders.

Soy MP Caleb Kositany called out on leaders who took part in the chaos, terming it as an ‘old school tactic’.

“Sponsored violence by Kieleweke in Murang’a, this is a very old school. It’s a church function for heaven’s sake, they want to evict us from church too?

“Deep state-sponsored violence in Muranga an attempt to stop DP from attending a church function at Kenol. It shall fail in Jesus’ name,” the MP said.
