Renown activist and Busia senator Okiya Omtatah is demanding president William Ruto to apologize to the Judiciary, Kenyans as well as petitioners over his recent remarks.
In a statement, Omtatah described the remarks that were directed at the judiciary as “most unfortunate, reckless, misguided and unconstitutional”.
While dispelling claims of bribing judges, Omtatah challenged the head of state to provide evidence.
“His Excellency the President has a right under the law to be heard, and he also has a right to protest just as he has done, and he has access to intelligence, which other Kenyans and I don’t have,” he said.
“I look him straight in the eye and challenge him to table the evidence of bribe-taking against any judge or bribe-giving he has against any litigant and let the chips fall where they may.”
Ruto has widely faced criticism after he vowed to defy court rulings, accusing judges of being used by graft cartels to derail his development agenda.
Miguna Miguna is among those who warned Ruto of what his stand implies.
“I say NO! Stop threatening the judiciary. Remember that without the judiciary, you wouldn’t be president. You can’t pretend to protect the independence of the judiciary through threats. If you know thieves stealing public money (including those you protect like Atwoli) let us see them charged, tried and convicted. However, we say NO to autocracy! ” he said.
“Why did you lie that you would end despot Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy of impunity? Why would you expect ordinary Kenyans to obey and uphold laws and courts you defy? You are fermenting CHAOS and you soon see the FRUITS of CHAOS!,” he further said.
