I hope we could prosecute corruption suspects with the same fire as with this next case I am writing about. Apparently two IT officers have been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts for leaking CCTV footage of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga in Nairobi CBD at night.
The footage which went viral with many Kenyans curious as to what could be happening was taken on June 2nd and showed Raila and Uhuru strolling along Kenyatta Avenue with their motorcade and security details in tow.
The two were presumed to be making an inspection of the recent roadworks happening along the road. The IT officers; Patrick Ambongo and Janet Ayonga were charged on Wednesday with circulating online the CCTV footage which was captured on June 2 2020.
Their crime according to court documents was the unauthorized interception of computer data contrary to section 17 (1) of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act.
“On 2nd day of June 2020, at around 2020 hours at Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya jointly, jointly intentionally and without authorization intercepted a security CCTV footage capturing the Head of State entourage along Kenyatta avenue,” the charge sheet reads.
The 2 IT officers who work for The Sarova Stanley hotel are now seeking President Uhuru Kenyatta’s statement the case. Their lawyer Danstan Omari on Wednesday said they will also be demanding the footage, and for AU envoy Raila Odinga’s statement.
Omari said the suspects will use them as evidence in the case during trial as his clients have since lost their jobs owing to the case.
