ODM Demands For Unconditional Release Of Nane Nane Protestors

The Orange Democratic Movement is demanding for the release of over 70 protestors, who were arrested on Thursday in anti-government protests dubbed Nane Nane march.

In a statement by the Party’s Communication Director Philip Etale, the party noted that the protestors were arrested in Nairobi and other parts of the country.

Majority of them are being held at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

“It is worthy to note that some of those arrested are people living with disabilities. We call on the relevant authorities to have them released immediately,” the party said.

Talam noted that the Constitution of Kenya allows Freedom of expression, picketing and protesting, under article 37.

“Therefore Kenyans are allowed in Law to picket and present their petitions to government on what they feel is not being done right, put their demands and make their case heard,” he said.

According to the acting IG of police Gilbert Masengeli, 174 people were arrested in Thursdays protests. Out of them, 126 were arrested in Nairobi, 22 in Kitengela and 26 others from Emali in Makueni county.

He also revealed that one police officer was only injured adding that peace and normalcy prevailed in most parts of the country.

“Consequently, the National Police Service would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all law-abiding Kenyans for preserving peace and maintaining law and order across the country today.

“Kenya is a democratic country and as a service, we wish to reiterate our commitment to promoting democratic policing that is upholds the rule of law, professionalism, transparency and accountability,” Masengeli said.
