Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has condemned the teargassing of Azimio supporters who were celebrating Raila Odinga’s birthday in Nairobi CBD on Sunday.
In a statement, the governor said that it was shameful for the police to treat people that way yet they had not contravened the law in any manner.
He noted that Kenyans have been celebrating birthdays, noting that Raila was also celebrated in Kisumu peacefully.
“Why was Nairobi different? What Crime did the people of Nairobi commit?” he posed.
“It is cowardly, shameful and unconstitutional for the police to attack and injure harmless people who had gathered in a street in Nairobi to celebrate their leader,” he further said.
“I would like to inform the Minister of Interior that freedom of association and peaceful assembly is guaranteed for every Kenyan under our constitution,” said the governor.
Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome also condemned police officers who were responsible for the incident, saying that action will be taken against them.
“The Inspector General, IG Japhet Koome has directed for stern administrative action to be taken against the Officers who engaged in the unlawful action,” read a statement from his office.
