Raila Odinga’s sister Ruth Odinga has accused the Nyanza people of not being determined to ensure that the ODM leader wins the presidential elections.
Speaking during an aspirant’s meeting on Thursday, October 28, Ruth said that the people of Nyanza were doing so little in helping Odinga to achieve his 2022 presidential ambition.
She further said that the people have abandoned Odinga and that they have been reluctant in boosting the former prime minister’s presidential bid.
“We sit back and we say this time around, we’re clinching the Presidency yet you’re not registering as voters. You are looking at Raila going up and climbing Mount Kenya and suffering going down to Turkana and everywhere,” she stated.
Ruth claimed that Raila has been enjoying the support and gaining more people in voter-rich regions to support his bid yet the people from his own region have no votes.
“You’re seeing crowds that are coming from other regions to support him, who are willing to come up and do everything and they have votes. You say Raila is moving closer to becoming the president yet you have no votes,” the former deputy governor of Kisumu county said.
Raila toured Kisumu on October 25, where he expressed his concern on the low number of locals who have registered as voters in the ongoing mass voter registration exercise. The exercise is set to be concluded on November 2.
“When faced with the kind of battle that is ahead of us, it would be ill-advised to remain unprepared. If your opponent is sharpening the knife and you are busy singing and clapping for him, is that a strategy or foolishness?” he stated.
Previously, Raila said that he will back out of the presidential elections race if the number of registered voters does not meet his expectation.
“I have said I will make my decision to run for the presidency at the end of the month. But my supporters should arm themselves with voters’ cards. I will declare after I have seen how people have registered,” Odinga said.
