No One Is Taking Your Job – Uhuru Tells Insecure Sonko

Date:

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday told Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to support NMS director-general Mohammed Badi, further adding that nobody was taking his job from him.

“No one’s job has been snatched. We should work together to develop Nairobi,” President Uhuru said.

The President was speaking while addressing residents outside Pumwani, after holding a meeting with Boda Boda safety association officials.

The President urged Nairobi residents to support General Badi in managing the county.

“I’m humbly requesting you to support Badi because he is doing good work, and let us work together. If Nairobi improves it will be for everybody,” the President said.

Nairobi county is yet to receive development funds after Mike Sonko refused to assent to the Sh37.5 billion budget.

In the budget, the County Assembly awarded Badi Sh27.1 billion leaving Sonko with only Sh8.4 billion.

It is not however the first time the President is asking Sonko to work with Badi.

In August, President Uhuru asked Sonko to stop politicizing the NMS something that led to the beginning of a short-lived handshake between the governor and NMS boss.

A week ago Governor Sonko said he was not afraid of the President and would not sit back and see Nairobi residents be oppressed.

“We are not against development but people evicted should be compensated,” he said.

In the BBI report that was released on Wednesday, it proposes that Nairobi county be granted a special status.

According to the proposal, the National government should be in charge of the five key county functions.

The five functions include health, transport, public works, planning, and fire and disaster management.

Should the proposal be passed, the national government can take away considerable power from future Nairobi governors without the requirement of a deed of transfer as is it the current case.

This implies that the Nairobi Metropolitan Service might still exist despite the deed of functions set to expire in the next two years.
